Wave Fave I remember meeting Chieli on a smooth jazz cruise years ago. He was quite honestly the sweetest, shyest, most adorable man.
Chieli Minucci interview page 2 JM: Why and how did you keep Special EFX going? A lot of it had to do with marketing. The Special EFX brand was still commercially viable. It felt weird when I did Masterpiece under the name but without George, but eventually I felt like I was keeping the Special EFX style in place arrangement wise, just without his percussion on it.
Because I have such eclectic tastes, the tricky thing for me is always balancing commercial radio friendly songs with my love of fusion and more expansive concepts. When Shanachie said they wanted Genesis, they said I had to include a few smooth jazz songs because those are the ones that hook listeners in.

When I include vocal tunes, my lyrics are always about fantasies, relationships, the way people come and go and a reflection of the way I see things. The great thing about this kind of work is that I can compose and produce music of all different styles. Like today, I have been assigned to write music in the style of film composer Thomas Newman.
Firstcom then tries to get this music sold for TV and film licensing. I actually find it easier to do work on assignment because I know exactly what I have to accomplish.
